DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD
![]() Sharon Urquhart Richardson, member of the Newport News (VA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, received the Distinguished Career Award from The Ohio State University College of Social Work and was inducted into their 2022 Hall of Fame. Her career began in Liberia West Africa and includes founding the first School for the Blind, leadership in establishing the SOS Children’s Village for orphans and introducing Operation Smile and traveling with them to provide free surgery for children with deformities. For these accomplishments Sharon was awarded the Order of the Star of Africa, one of Liberia’s highest honors. She became Assistant Professor at Hampton University, her undergraduate alma mater, and retired from Newport News Public Schools as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Sharon was appointed to The Links, Incorporated National Ethics and Standards Committee by Gwendolyn B. Lee, 14th National President, has served as National Director of International Trends and Services during the tenure of Margot James Copeland, 15th National President and was National Chairman of Education Across the Miles-Africa under the leadership of Kimberly Jeffries Leonard, 17th National President. Sharon initiated the expansion of The Links international outreach to Liberia and helped to lead a mission trip to Liberia and Ghana. Sharon, a 42-year member, has served as vice president and president of her Links chapter.

Link Christine M. Darden awarded the Congressional gold medal
Members of The Newport News (VA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated are “over the moon” with the news that Alumna member, Link Christine M. Darden has been awarded the Congressional gold medal for her contributions to NASA during the Space Race. From The White House, Office of the Press Secretary:
On Friday, November 8, 2019, the President signed into law:
H.R. 1396, the “Hidden Figures Congressional Gold Medal Act,” which provides for the award of Congressional gold medals to Katherine Johnson and Dr. Christine Darden, the posthumous award of Congressional gold medals to Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, and the award of a Congressional gold medal in recognition of all of the women who contributed to the success of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration during the Space Race.
